Ham Radio School was founded with one enduring goal: helping anyone earn an FCC Amateur Radio license and experience the joy of ham radio — with real understanding, not brain-numbing memorization.
Too many license prep programs ask students to simply memorize answers to exam questions. That approach may get you through a test, but it leaves you unprepared for the real experience of operating on the air with confidence and competence.
Ham Radio School was built on a different philosophy. Our programs of study are designed to bring technical topics into reach, to build genuine understanding of how radio works, and to prepare you not just for exam success — but for a lifetime of enjoyment in the amateur radio hobby.
From Technician to Amateur Extra, every lesson is crafted to explain the why behind the material — connecting concepts to real-world radio operations so that what you learn actually sticks.
We want every student to hit the air with the knowledge and confidence to explore everything ham radio has to offer — not just a license certificate on the wall.— Stu Turner, WØSTU, Founder
The People Behind Ham Radio School
Stu Turner is the founder of Ham Radio School and the primary author of all three license preparation courses. His decades of experience as a science and engineering educator — including a distinguished career as a professor at the United States Air Force Academy — give him a rare ability to make complex technical subjects genuinely accessible to students of all backgrounds.
An Amateur Extra class operator, Stu brings both deep technical expertise and infectious enthusiasm for the hobby to every lesson. His goal is simple: to make sure that every student not only passes the exam, but truly understands the radio science and regulations behind it.
Bob Witte is a licensed Amateur Extra class operator, prolific ham radio author, and a passionate advocate for the hobby. Bob brings his broad technical knowledge and years of on-air experience to the Amateur Extra License Course, co-authoring the advanced material that prepares students for the most challenging of the three FCC license exams.
Bob is also an active amateur radio instructor whose license classes consistently achieve outstanding first-exam pass rates using Ham Radio School materials. His real-world operating experience — including SOTA activations, VHF weak-signal work, and HF DX — enriches every lesson with practical perspective.
How We Approach Learning
Every lesson follows a three-step structure — detailed reading material, video instruction, and a section quiz to prove your understanding before moving on. Reinforcement at every step means the material actually sticks.
We explain the science, regulations, and operations behind each exam topic so you genuinely understand what you're learning. Students who understand the material pass more confidently — and become better operators.
For every topic, optional depth learning resources go far beyond what the exam requires — articles, videos, interactive apps, and external links for students who want to dig deeper into the fascinating world of radio.
Our courses work equally well for independent self-study or as the foundation for a club-taught license class. Affiliated instructors receive a complete set of classroom teaching materials to run a professional course. Learn about Instructor Resources →
Full course access is priced to be accessible to anyone. Our extensive free resources — articles, visualization apps, section quizzes, and practice exams — are available to everyone at no cost, always.
Ham Radio School is known for its personal support to students. Stu and Bob will personally answer your questions during your studies, as needed. Ham Radio School isn't a faceless platform — it's a program built by operators who genuinely want to see you succeed and get on the air.
